Pathology Sciences Medical Group is an independently owned CAP-accredited anatomic pathology laboratory that has been located in Chico, California for over 60 years and serves the needs of Butte, Glenn, Yuba, Sutter, Colusa, Tehama, and Shasta counties.

Histology Technician

We are currently seeking a full-time ASCP registered or registry-eligible HT or HTL for our anatomic pathology laboratory. 

Qualifications include:

  • Must possess good histology skills and be able to contribute adequately to accomplish daily productivity goals by working with the histology team and other staff members.
  • Must be detail oriented, have good manual dexterity, good close-up and color vision.
  • Must have good communication skills and the ability to work will with others.
  •  Must have good computer skills.

Job Summary:

  • Processes, embeds and cuts paraffin blocks of surgical, autopsy and non-gyn cytology specimens.
  • Performs routine and special histochemical stains following established protocol; prepare reagents and stains and tissue controls.
  • Performs IHC preparations (reagents and controls) and staining under the direction of the histology supervisor or laboratory director.
  • Performs validation of new antibodies, probes or detection kits; performs verification of new clones and/or lot numbers of established antibodies and detection kits.
  • Adheres to equipment maintenance schedules and reagent utilization guidelines.
  • Participates in all quality control efforts and adheres to regulatory standards.
  • Performs reagent recycling and quality control of recycled reagents.
  • Maintains files of slides and paraffin blocks.
  • Maintains cleanliness of the work environment including daily cleaning of microtome and waterbath, embedding centers, microtomy room floor and other tasks necessary to maintain a clean department.
  • Follows all safety policies and procedures including hazardous substance and infection control guidelines.
  • Assists in supply inventory and stocking supplies.
  • Performs other duties within the laboratory as assigned.

Pathology Sciences Medical Group (PSMG) in Chico, California is currently seeking a full-time cytotechnologist for our anatomic pathology laboratory. 


A Staff Cytotechnologist

  • Performs microscopic evaluations of cytologic specimens, rendering a final diagnosis on negative Pap smears and performing microscopic assessments on abnormal Pap smears and all non-gynecologic specimens prior to final interpretation by a pathologist.
  • Enters coded diagnoses into the pathology computer. 
  • When needed prepares and stains pathology specimens.
  • Must be compliant with all CLIA rules and regulations pertaining to qualifications (493.1483).
  • Must possess a current license as a cytotechnologist issued by the State of California.

The Cytology department operates 6 days a week, Sunday – Friday. Cytotechnologists will render a final diagnosis on negative gynecologic specimens and perform a microscopic assessment on abnormal gynecologic and all non-gynecologic specimens prior to final interpretation by a pathologist. They will also process gynecologic and non gynecologic specimens including preparation on BD equipment, staining and coverslipping.
